Tree Introduction's Alta® Magnolia Magnolia grandiflora ‘TMGH’ P.P.# 11,612 Alta® Magnolia is a good magnolia for plantings with space restrictions. Alta® should grow with a 2 to 1 height-to-width ratio. In addition, Alta® Magnolia grows dense, this not only means less pruning for the grower, but also a maintained appearance in the landscape. Alta® Magnolia has a more fibrous root system than many other magnolias, meaning less die back after planting. Origin: Discovered as a chance seedling growing in a production field at Future Trees Inc., Statesboro, GA. Hardiness: Zones 6b to 10 Ornamental features: Dense, upright framework of lustrous, dark-green leaves with rusty brown pubescence beneath. Habit and growth rate: Unique upright, columnar habit; better-than-average growth rate; extremely fibrous root system; ultimate size should be approximately 40 to 50 feet tall and 15 feet to 25 feet wide. After 11 years the parent was 21 feet high by 9 feet wide. Culture: Full sun; well-drained soil where adequate moisture and nutrients are available. Landscape Value: Useful for stately groupings, screens or hedges. Propagation methods: Vegetative cuttings. Pest/disease problems: None significant. |
